M \Y t. l'Uil Nl'MHER IS Books To Be Open Saturday Registration books will open in Warren County on Saturday, May 2, and will be closed at sunset on May 10. On each day (Sunday except ed) during such period, the Re gistrar for each election pre cinct in the county will keep his books open betwee n the I hours of 9 a. m. and sunset i for'the registration of voters. On each Saturday during such period each Registrar will at tend with his registration books at the polling place in his elec tion on precinct between the hours of 9 a. m. and sunset for registration of voters. Eight candidates have filed for a position on the five man board of education, three of whom are Negroes. The can didates for membership on this board are encumbents, Eugene Davis, Sam H. Massey, Jr.," Ed Harvey, Boyd Mayfield and Robert Gupton. Massey is being opposed by Mrs. Robert E. Ran som, Negro. Chairman Davis is opposed by Ernest Turner, president of the Warren Coun ty Chapter of the NAACP; and Mayfield is opposed by Wal ter R. Boyd, Negro, of Nut bush Township. Seven candidates, two of them Negroes, are seeking positions on the five-man board of county commissioners. The two Negro candidates are John R. Ellis of Warrenton, who is opposing en cumbent commissioner A. J. Ellington, and Marvin K. Boyd of Sandy Creek, who is op posing encumbent commission er Richard R. Davis. Under the district system Chairman Amos Capps, Robert Thorne and John Wilson, encumbents seeking re-election, are without opposi tion. A Negro, T. T.Clayton,War renton attorney, is also run ning for Warren County's seat In the General Assembly. This position Is also sought by Frank B. Banzet of Warrenton and W. R. Drake of Macon. S. E. Allen, veteran Register of Deeds, has filed for re-elec tlon. He is unopposed. Three Negroes are unopposed in their races for township constables. They are Leroy P. Cheek of Shocco Township; Francis Alston of Smith Creek, and James Jordan of Nutbush. Also unopposed in his race for constable of River Town ship is Jimmy C. Hudson. Other candidates for con stable are: Warrenton Town , ship?C R. Lloyd, Jr., and Wiley Douglas Vaughan; Jud klns?Haley Robinson and Roy Clark; Sandy Creek?George E. Shearin, Negro, and Earl Lewis, Jr. Draft Board Moves The Warren County Selective Service Board, quartered for nany years upstairs In the Did Bank of Warren Building, yesterday moved into new down stairs quarters. (Photo by Bill Jones) MARY COKER DORIS SMITH Students To Attend Governor's School Two Warren County High School students have been selected to study in the Gov ernor's School on the campus of Salem College in Winston Salem from July 10 to July 31. Selected for this honor were Miss Mary Claire Coker of the Norlina High School and Miss Doris LaVerne Smith of the North Warren High School. The Governor's School, or ganized by Governor Sanford and supported by a substan tial grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York and other grants from business and foundation leaders in Winston Salem, Is operated for gifted students of North Carolina for eight weeks each summer. Miss Coker is the daughter of Joe Thomas Coker and Vir gie Thompson Coker of Manson, and a member of the Junior class of Norlina High School. She has made outstanding grades in Natural Science and Mathematics with a 96 average in math, and has participated in Science Fairs. She attended church camp at Caswell during the summer of 1963. Miss Coker?a straight A student?has been a member of the girls basketball team for three years, of the hlgtfi school glee club for three years, has been a piano student for six ears, three In high school, md is junior class reporter. She was vice-president of the; tophomore class; choirester in he freshman class. She is a nember of Beta Club, FHA, 1-H Club, Order of the Rain raw for girls; a member of the "Jorlina Baptist Church where she is a soprano in the youth :hoir. She s an honor student, vice-pres dent of the local student coun *11, secretary of the North :arollna Student Council Or (See SCHOOL, page 4) Dr. Baxley To Serve On Staff Of Hospital Dr. Raiford Douglas Baxley pf Siler City, will come to Warrenton on June as a mem Mr of the Warren General Hos pital Staff and not as an em ployee of the hospital, David Richards, hospital administra :or, said yesterday. As a member of the staff Dr. Baxley will practice as surgeon m the Warren Coun !y Hospital and will also engage in private practice here. Richards said that he feels hat Warren General Hospital is fortunate to have a physi-1 :ian of Dr. Baxley's calibre is a member oi its staff, but regrets that he was quoted as announcing that Dr. Baxley vould be employed by the hos pital The hospital employ no physicians, he said. The main point, Richards said, is that Warren General Hospital will have a qualified surgeon on its staff. In asking that The Warren Record correct the impression created by the wo; d "employ ed," Richards said "A surgeon or a doctor is never employed by a hospital, at least not in this sense of the word. Neither has Dr. Baxley 'accepted a posi tion as surgeon with the local hospital,' rather he is coming to Warren County to practice privately. He will use the faci lities of Warren General to ac complish this practice. "We sincerely want Dr. Bax ley to get a full measure of cooperation and understanding from all citizens in the county and we need at this time to clarify his position and rela- ] tionship to the hospital. He will be in exactly the same position as Drs. Hunter, Allen, Cline, Holt, Foster in that he will have staff privileges but will in no way be employed by the hos pital." Drunk Drivers Are Sentenced By Court Three defendants were tried on drunk driving charges in Warren County Recorder's Court last Friday, and a fourth defendant was called and failed and Judgment absolute on his bond was ordered by Judge Julius Banzet, presiding over the session. Ernest Holt Weaver, Jr., pled not guilty on the drunk driving charge, but the court found him guilty and ordered him to pay a $100 fine and court costs. James Norman Harris pled guilty to the charge of drunk driving, as did Moses Bullock. Each of the defendants were fined $100 and taxed with court costs. Alfred Ran die Anderson, charged with drunk driving and with carrying a concealed wea pon, failed to appear in court to answer to the charges. Charles Parks was found guilty on an assault charge. Prayer for Judgment was con tinued for two years upon con dition that the defendant not violate any public laws of state for two years, remain of good behavior, and pay court costs. Zack Goines, charged with assault, was found not guilty. David Holdy was found guilty on an assault charge, and sen tenced " to the roads for 90 days. The road sentence was suspended for two years upon condition that the defendant not violate any laws of the state for two years, not go upon the premises of Zack Goines for one year, pay court costs and pay Clerk of Superior Court $7.00 for use of Dr. C. Speaking for the committee, Chairman Drake said, "We have :onsidered each of the can iidates and we are convinced hat Dr. Lake is the best quali ied to serve as Governor. He s a man of ability, intelligence, ind integrity. Also, he has a (ositive program that will mean iction for a better North Caro ina and all her citizens." LEG AMPl TATED Mrs. Delia F. Aycock of El beron, who has been a patient in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital for sometime, had her leg amputat ed on Tuesday morning. Two Warrenton merchants have bought a half-interest in a Norlina store, it was learned here yesterday. Raby L. Traylor, president of the Norlina Supermarket, ivhich has been operating sometime as an IGA store, said tiiat a half-interest in the store lias been sold to Dur ivood Johnson and Jimmy Roberts, owners and operators of the J&R Red and White Super market at Warrenton. and that Johnson had assumed the management of the Norlina store ? Johnson said that he and Ro berts had maintained their full interest in the Warrenton store and that there Would be no change in its operation. Traylor said that the Norlina Supermarket will be run as a Red and White Store as soon as the 30-day notice to IGA becomes effective. He said that since the death of John W. Dowling, former manager, that the store had had difficulty in securing the kind of manager they needed, and that he and the directors of the Norlina store were "very happy" that John son would manage the Norlina store. Johnson, who tregan his store duties with Colonial Store in Williamston, following services in World War II, came to War renton as assistant manager with Colonial Store. Upon the resignation of John Dowling in 19o3 to assume the manage ment of the new Norlina Super market, Johnson was promoted to manager of the Warrenton store. In 1960, Johnson and Jimmie Roberts, long associated as meat market manager for Col onial, resigned from the Col onial organization, to open up a lew Red and White store here. David L. Richards, Warren General Hospital Administra tor, was elected vice-president and Seal Sale Chairman. New directors named were Mrs. John Garrett, Mrs. Randolph Miles, W. C. Jones, Edward Hunter, M. K. Aycock, G. P. Grissom and C. H. Lambeth. A budget of $1,870.00 was presented by Howard Daniel, treasurer, and adopted. The TB Association had an active year, according to re ports given at the meeting. Seal Sale Chairman Charles T. At each precinct meeting a precinct committee of five, two of them women, was elected. Each precinct committee elect ed a precinct chairman an<J vice-chairman, one of them a woman. MRS.
